The Bridgeport team will receive initial training at a two day seminar in Spokane. They said consulting with specialists and other educators expe- rienced in this area will be an ilp- portant part of developing the long range plan. Program implementation and evaluation by the local team are also components of the grant which ends in August, 1992. "Research and common sense have shown that young children learn in ways that are very different from those who are older," Homer said. "They learn best through direct sen- sory encounters and not through for- mat academic processes, such as sit- ting for long periods of time during worksheets or workbook pages. "Since early childhood is a time of rapid mental growth and activity, education must be based upon the ways kids learn. It must take advan- tage of their natural curiosity and desire to explore, manipulate, create, dismantle and reconstruct things in their environment. The goal of the Bridgeport team is to accommodate the individual child's specific devel- opmental needs, abilities and interests in the continuing development of the learning program."
