The green came paint didn't hide my friend's frustration. It was hot weather, and as dry as the inside of a toaster. No twig would tolerate the pressure of a hunting boot; even the road dust seemed to crackle. I refrained from mouthing the old platitude "... all brushed up in the pole patches. Might as well head for camp." But that's the way I felt. Normally conditions like this produced some dfsetflng ad- vantages. Elk were big animals, and the dry litter cracked un- der their weight, too. Wallows and water holes became popular hangouts, and a patient archer could score there. Though the bulls weren't yet rutting, calves could be expected to squeal occasionally, divulging a herd's location. But this season wasn't panning out that way. The elk weren't moving much. Copious forage provided them the luxury of grazing in virtually any spot outside the thickest timber.
