But those who also need to lose weight would do well to think about getting into shapes. "Thinking shapes - as in circle, square, triangle, and octagon - is a good starting point for anyone who'd like to lose weight and keep it off," says, Judi Bannister, a representative of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). Bannister provides these tips: The circle represents unity and inclusiveness. It reminds us that successful weight loss requires a circle of boosters: family, friends, and/or members of a support group like a TOPS chapter. These boosters encourage us, applaud our progress, and help us stay on track when the going gets tough. The square hearkens back to the old phrase " a square meal," meaning a well balanced, satisfying variety of foods. "'You can't have long-term success by limiting yourselftoa narrow selection," Bannister says. "What you do to lose weight is what you must continue to do to keep it off- and nobody can stay on a highly restricted diet forever. Besides, we all need the vitamins, fiber, trace minerals and other nutrients that come from eating wholesome food." The triangle reminds us of "try- angle"- that is, the importance of motivation and desire. "A favorite phrase in TOPS is "Yougottawanna,'" says Bannister."Youmust want to try, and your reasons for trying have to be personally meaningful. You can't lose wright for somebody else." The octagon turns up everywhere- it's the shape of the stop sign. "This shape tells us that we need to stop doing some things, like mindless snacking," Bannister says. "'And it's equally important to replace the bad old habits with good new ones. If we snack from boredom, maybe we need a hobby that keeps our hands busy. If we snack from hunger, we need to choose healthy foods rather than empty calories." Each week in their chapter meetings, TOPS members share weight-loss tips and strategies like those. Members motivate each other and sometimes- even exercise together-for instance, taking walks in pairs or groups.
