Brewstcr Drug Store is an old and honored town institution; its roots date back to the 1940s. it used to be located on Main Street, with a doubie storefront and a soda fountain. For the past 21 years it has been located along Seventh Street, an old-fashioned store selling almost everything from glass figurines to hammers. Now it is moving again, to a brand new store almost twice the size of the existing location. Current owner Ran Anderson has owned the business almost exactly 26 years; he purchased it"July 1, 1970. I bought it from Frank Day. Most old- limers will remember him." At that time the business was located in the old McKinley Building, the current home of the Apple Junction clothing store. Anderson was working as a pharmacist in a Clarkston drugstore at the time. He wanted to be his own boss, he said. A friend of his, a teacher in Pateros, persuaded him to come look at the business opportunity just up the road in Brewster. "Frank Day took a liking to me, and he made it possible to for me to buy it," Anderson recalled. It was an "old-fashioned drugstore," Anderson said, with a soda fountain in the back and all kinds of goods for sale. Anderson moved the store to its present location along Seventh Street (its current neighbor is Brewster IGA). At that time he joined the True Value Hardware chain. Brewster Drug and True Value Hardware offers a full line of prescription and over the counter medications, as well as medical aids. Prescription medicines are dispensed by Anderson or his three pharmacists, his daughterand son Keith and Pam Anderson and Joan Callahan. Pharmacist's technician Jerry McCann also works behind the prescription counter. Medicines are only part of the store's merchandise. The hardware side offers paint and hammers and sprinkler heads and tape measures; there are also shelves of dishes and household appliances, telephones and toys, greeting cards and glass figurines, magazines and candy. To all of that will be added still more stuffin the new Brewster Drug; it will be 12,000 square feet, about twice the size of the existing store. It will be located at the junction of SR 97 and Seventh Street, where the 97 In and Out Drive-ln did business for many years. "We will be expanding quite extensively in the hardware line," Anderson said. A diversified product base is necessary in the days of managed health care, he said. Under the health management organizations, patients are tied into a network of doctors, clinics, hospitals and pharmacists. If they want to go to elsewhere---outside the HMO network---to see a different doctor or buy a prescription, they must pay for it themselves. Anderson said he thinks the HMOs will have a big impact on drugstores, and not a positive one. "You're going to see a lot of little ones go by the wayside." Anderson has survived and prospered in the teeth of competition that has killed many a small, locally owned business--low price chains such as Wal-Mart. He credits that to a good relationship with local doctors, clinics and hospitals. Without that good relationship, he wouldn't have been able to do as well, he said. He believes the other key to success is his membership in the True Value company, which is owned by its members. "True Value has been my salvation," he said. The company could buy in bulk and get its members price breaks they would not be able to obtain on their own. "We buy in group. It's called relay buying." Anderson said he expects to soon start construction on the new store. "Hopefully, within the next two months you will see some ground turning." He said he hopes to be in the new store by November.
